Warm Up to the Worlds

Port Arthur Stadium, Thunder Bay

What's A Warm Up?

The time for Warm Up to the Worlds has come and gone, but impressions of its happenings still linger.

The event opener on Sunday proved to be a good time with the city’s hockey celebrities taking the win against Canada’s Junior National team, 11-2. Thunder Bay’s favourite brothers, the Staals, along with Tom and Taylor Pyatt and Patrick Sharp won the game, but not without the help of association executive director, Warren Philp’s bag of tricks.

For some of the innings, Team Canada swung with foam or whiffle bats and ran to the outfield with plastic, Velcro pads. The NHLers’ unfair advantage didn’t phase Team Canada; all they wanted were pictures with the celebrities.

The event’s opening ceremonies were not without entertainment. The night began with the Local Selects, Team Canada and Team Chinese Taipei taking batting practice. The cultural portion of the opening ceremonies showcased local talent in very different traditional dances. The groups’ colourful costumes and intricate steps had the crowd cheering for more. The association would like to thank Wendy Huang and the Lakehead Chinese Folk Music and Dance group, as well as David Wilkinson Simard and the Northern Woodlands Ojibway Dance Group for their performances.

The Kid’s Baseball Clinic on Tuesday saw more than 50 young players. With instruction from Team Canada and Team Chinese Taipei the children walked away with more than just signatures. The kids and parents alike enjoyed their time spent with the future pros.

That night fans entered the stadium for the event’s first game to see Team Canada versus Thunder Bay Selects. The game proved to be entertaining as the Selects and Team Canada were head to head until the eighth inning when Canada scored four runs bringing the final score to 6-2. Canadian fans in the stands weren’t disappointed as Canada took the win against Chinese Taipei, 8-4.

Team Chinese Taipei’s double-header on Wednesday started off well with a win against the Thunder Bay Selects; 7-3. Despite bad weather, Team Chinese Taipei took on Team Canada for a second time. The nine-inning game ended badly for Taipei with only five hits and no runs giving the win to Canada with a final score of 8-0.

The event’s success is directly linked to the support of sponsors, volunteers, fans and of course the Thunder Bay International Baseball Association’s executive. Special thanks go to the Port Arthur, Fort William and Lakehead Rotary Clubs, Lakehead Canoe Club, John Cosgrove chair of the Dragon Boat Festival committee for their efforts in providing the teams with fun and relaxation.
